Developments in Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) and Advanced Transport Telematics (ATT) in the US, Europe and Japan are discussed in this text, covering such areas as advanced traffic control, route guidance and navigation, public transport and fleet management. The work includes an overview of current IVHS/ATT programmes in each continent - DRIVE/ATT and PROMETHIUS in Europe, IVHS in the US and VICS in Japan. Specific projects and sytems described in depth include SOCRATES, PAMELA/ADEPT, RACS and navigation systems in Japan.... navigation system was sold by Honda and fitted in its Accord model in 1981 using a gas rate gyroscope as the direction sensor [5]. In 1987, Toyota Electro Multivision was installed in its Crown, the first car to use a CRT to display the map [6].
